Mr. M. Husseyn Umar

Mr. M. Husseyn Umar joined ABNR in 1988 and became a partner in 1989. A University of Indonesia law graduate, he has headed the Ministry of Shipping/Sea Communication’s legal division and served as its Director of State Maritime Enterprises. He was President Director of PT.PANN Ship Leasing Corporation and then President Director of PT.PELNI National Shipping Line. Subsequently, he was appointed as Transport, Communications and Maritime Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague (the Netherlands), and Sectoral Support Advisor on Shipping, Port, Multimodal Transport and Maritime Legislation of the UNCTAD Secretariat in Geneva.


He has been chairman of the University of Indonesia’s Center for Maritime Legal Studies and a member of the Indonesian Commodity Exchange’s Advisory Board. He has also been Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Sea-Communications Discussion Forum and Advisor to the Indonesian National Ship Owners’ Association (INSA). Currently, he is a Vice Chairman of the Board and Arbitrator at the Indonesian National Board of Arbitration (BANI). He is also a member of the ICSID Panels of Conciliators and Arbitrators in Washington D.C., and a member of the Asia Pacific Regional Arbitration Group (APRAG) Panelist of Arbitrators in Sydney.He is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).


Within ABNR, he handles matters relating to commercial, corporate and maritime laws, and transport laws in general, as well as matters pertaining to investment, financing and leasing of ships and alternative dispute resolution including arbitration.
